Saturday, October 28, 2023 - Gainesville, Florida

It's been 10 days since we returned home.  Sooz's back went out the next day with a severe back spasm.  She has been taking care of herself and is doing a lot better.  I have been feeling good, sleeping well and beginning to slowly re-start exercising. While I wasn't formally exercising on the trip, we did walk a lot, climbed up and down 1,000's of stairs and were very active. Both of us lost several pounds. This is despite having some sort of dessert (or two) daily. As an avid baker and a big fan of The Great British Bake Off, Sooz tried as many new cakes, tarts etc to replicate at home. Of course I supported her. Our all time favorite is Sticky Toffee Pudding with vanilla ice cream.

A couple of observations since returning:

  • My immediate reaction when walking into our house was, "This house is huge!"  Our house is average size, but it seemed really big when we got home.  Some of the hotel/pub rooms we stayed in during the trip were miniscule.
  • Much of the food here in the US doesn't taste as good as in Europe and the UK.  Most food there contains less chemicals, preservatives and hormones, and it makes a big difference in the overall taste.
  • Food seems much more expensive here, even Switzerland food prices in the markets were cheaper.  It was a shocker going to Publix.
  • We are going to try more local farmers markets here in Gainesville.
  • It's nice to be home in familiar surroundings.  I notice it takes less energy to do the simple things like shopping, driving, and making simple decisions.
  • When we are traveling, everything is new and different, which is part of the fun of traveling. It consumes more mental and physical energy.  Being back home, I find I can do similar activities like we did during our trip, but I get less tired.
  • I am now fully convinced and accept that I am no longer 25 years old - my stamina and energy reserves are less than even 5 years ago.
  • Sooz and I are amazed and grateful that after being together 24/7 for nearly 6 months we are still married 😀 and still enjoy each other's company.  Not to say that we didn't get a little testy with each other during the trip.  However, the episodes were brief and not serious.  We mostly knew when to stop, take a breather and make amends, if needed.
  • I'm also very grateful to our son Max for staying in our house, keeping an eye on things and taking care of our dog Bandit. Bandit will miss Max when Max moves into his new apartment next week.
  • I estimate we rode around 7,500 miles on the bike and drove 1,500 miles in the rental car the last month.
  • We visited 16 countries - Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Croatia, Italy, Switzerland, Lichtenstein, Netherlands, Belgium, France, England, Wales, and Scotland.
  • I'm really glad we went on the trip.  It was an incredible adventure and one we'll always remember.
  • Both of our sons came to visit for a bit. Sam and his girlfriend, Miranda joined us in Andermatt, Switzerland.  Max and Ash joined us in Cardiff, Wales, and our friend Sheila met us in Arles, France. Each time we had company we saw more sights, tried great restaurants, and just packed more in to each day. We had to rest a bit after they left.
  • The most common question we are asked is "What was your favorite part of the trip? There is no one answer. It can depend on weather, accommodations, people we met, food, language barriers and just our overall mood. Sooz really liked Berlin. I did too, however I was sick and didn't explore as much as she did.
  • No matter how much we saw or experienced, there was usually something more we could have seen or explored.
  • Traveling on the motorcycle, especially with Florida tags, is a great way to meet people.  Lots of folks, seeing we were on a bike, came up to us and asked if we were really from Florida, or tell us about some of their motorcycle adventures, or just wanted introduce themselves and chat.  Something about being on a motorcycle breaks down some barriers and makes us more approachable, which is fun.

Sunday, October 15, 2023 - Basel, Switzerland

Our trip is winding down.  We drove from Annecy, France to Basel a couple of days ago.  We have walked around a little and enjoyed the weather.  Temps dropped 2 days ago to low 40s at night and highs of mid 50s during the day.  It feels good.

I think due to a combination of knowing we will be leaving soon and the cumulative fatigue from our amazing trip, we are low in energy.  Tomorrow we drive to Heidelberg, turn in the rental car and take a train to Frankfurt where we will stay 2 nights before flying home to Gainesville on Wednesday the 18th.

Tuesday, October 10, 2023 - Annecy, France; Bourg-Saint-Maurice, France; Moncalieri (Turin), Italy; Cannes, France

It's been a busy week or so.  After leaving Sanary-sur-Mer we drove along the Mediterranean coast to St. Tropez for lunch on the beach.  It was fun seeing how the other 1/10th of 1 percent live.  The food was good, the prices were too high and a couple of the older men and women we saw on the beach should cover up more.

We continued along the French coast to Cannes where we stayed 2 nights in the downtown area at the Hotel Victoria.  The hotel bordered the Rue d'Antibes which is similar to Worth Ave. in Palm Beach; very high end, although Sooz saw many stores that also were in malls in Florida.  Again, it was fun to people watch and stroll by Palace of Festivals and Congresses of Cannes where the Cannes Film Festival takes place.  I went in the tourist office and asked if we could take a tour of the building and the man at the counter very politely smiled and said, "No, the public is only allowed inside 2 days a year."  And, today was not one of those days.  It was worth a shot.

After Cannes, we started driving north spending a night in Moncalieri, outside Turin, Italy.  Our room had a nice view of the Po River.  It was fun, once again, to have breakfast at the hotel and realize families and kids are similar to those we see almost anywhere.  There was a youth soccer team having breakfast with their parents and we smiled a lot remembering when Sam and Max were their ages.

The next day we continued north.  One travel spot on my to-do list was Col de l'Iseran the highest paved mountain pass at 9,087 feet.  The weather has been fantastic, mid 70s to low 80s and full sun and this day was no different.  We stopped at the pass in our rental car among the motorcyclists.  Sooz and I both smiled at the bikers but realized we made the right decision by dropping off our motorcycle a couple of weeks earlier for shipping back to Florida and renting a car.

That night we spent in a large B&B in Bourg-Saint-Maurice, France.  We were the only guests in the B&B and we had fun and interesting discussions with the owners, Karine and "Jeff".  Bourg-Saint-Maurice is one of the premier skiing spots in the world.  They attract visitors from around the world.  One mind blowing statistic is the town of 17,000 residents has over 4 million tourists, mainly during the winter ski season.  That is incredible and, while the residents appreciate the economic benefits of the tourists, Karine and Jeff think it has grown too much too fast and needs to be dialed back a little.  Locals can no longer afford to live there, similar to what we have heard in several locations, including Florida.

We are currently in Annecy, France nicknamed the "Pearl of the French Alps" and one of Sooz's must see places.  Sooz is checking out the local market

After 4 nights, we will continue north eventually flying back to Gainesville from Frankfurt October 18, a week from tomorrow - not something Sooz wants to talk about.

October 4, 2023 - Sanary-sur-Med, France, French Riviera on the Mediterranean Sea near Toulon

After leaving Arles 2 days ago, we drove to Aix-en-Provence and spent the night.  Before we left we visited several museums including the Granet XXe Museum - Collection Jean Planque where we saw paintings by Cézanne, Monet, Van Gogh, Degas and Picasso.  We kept shaking our heads wondering if it was real.  There were so many famous painters represented that it didn't seem possible in such a small town and showing in the small chapel of the White Penitents, a 17th century refurbished church.

We had to go through metal detectors, open our bags and were closely watched by multiple security guards, but it didn't seem enough, considering what they were protecting.  Although, I was asked by one of the security guards to step back when I got too close to several sculptures and a subdued but persistent alarm went off.  We were allowed to take pictures as long as we didn't use flashes.

Yesterday we drove to Sanary-sur-Med on the Mediterranean coast.  This morning we walked around the waterfront dock area and had a very nice lunch.  The weather is in the mid-80s and sunny.  Tomorrow we will head out probably east along the coast for awhile and then start heading north back to Heidelberg to return our car on the 16th.
